A cardan shaft is a mechanical component for transmitting torque and rotation, and is usually used to connect other parts of a power transmission system that cannot be directly connected due to distance or the need for relative motion between them. The word “cardan” is derived from the name of the Italian mathematician Gerolamo Cardano.
Cardan shafts are torque carriers: they are subjected to torsion and shear stress equal to the difference between the input torque and the load. As a result, they must be strong enough to withstand the stress, but not so heavy that their inertia would increase due to the weight.
Cardan shafts have one or more universal joints, jaw couplings, or rag joints, and sometimes a spline or sliding joint, to allow for changes in the alignment and spacing of the driven and driven parts.
